Trusting my instincts is something I’m learning to do more and more as I get older, so when I spotted a woman wearing a gorgeous jacket on the tube I have no idea why I didn’t ask her where it came from.
It was dusky pink, with no lining and made from a non-stretch guipure type lace. The cut was simple, cropped and slightly boxy with no collar, in short I fell in love with it. Of course a jacket like that will serve no warming/protecting purpose but who cares when it can make even your most boring outfit look exciting and fancy. Short of making a shrine for it I don’t think there’s anything I can do except: dig out the green guipure dress I was going to eBay, try to craft a similar jacket from an old Primarni frock and search for similar jackets on Shopstyle check, check and check.
A few asides about lace:
My mum is a college lecturer and I once made bobbin lace at one of their open days, so amazingly exciting you would not believe.
Not strictly lace, but once I got so obsessed with dotted swiss and couldn’t find it anywhere that I contemplated sitting with a length of muslin and hand-embroidering the dots like they used to in the Olden Days.
Pining for Guipure

I’m sorry I comment on your blog so much.
When I did my BA I bought a roll of dotted Swiss for no reason other than that I liked it. It was expensive and I had no use for it, but somehow it got frittered away on various things. I forget the textile factory who made mine, but I have all the sample sheets at home and like to stroke them fondly.
Yeah you better be sorry for making me feel loved and popular.
It’s so pretty isn’t it? Jels of a whole roll. Dotted Swiss is the opposite of a hangover, like all the pretty breezy country scenes in a Hiyao Mizayaki film. Maybe I could make a purpose built dotted swiss dress with biscuit pockets to chase away the Sunday evening dread?
yes most definitely nice jackets – thinking of getting the black one myself.
I’ve bought a shirt made from turquoise dotted swiss from Primani of all places a few years ago. Hate the shirt, but love the fabric. I recks the guy in the fabric shop in Balham will totes order some for you if you’re looking to make something. Failing that, I know for a fact that you can buy some on eBay.
Love the jackets. I’m picturing a long burgundy guipure box jacket to the knees.
Where is the red one from? I have been eyeing up the black one since I saw it in London. Want, want, want.
I put the links in the text but it’s not immediately noticeable, sorry! The jacket is Oscar de la Renta from Matches, on sale but still so pricey boo hoo!
