Things To Look Forward To In 2012 pt2

Here is part two, as I mentioned before Rachael has got 2K12 exhibs totally covered, but these are the ones that I personally want to see. Apologies if you don’t live in London, but hey! At least your taxes aren’t paying for the Olympics for the next few years amirite? LOL. Aside from the art-rants [...]

The Future and Beginners

As a bit of a Miranda July fan I was really excited to catch The Future at the lovely IFC theatre while I was out in New York. It’s a more of a tweefest than her first feature length, Me You and Everyone You Know, which feels a lot simpler. Tweeness is a little grating now, but you can forgive her because she pretty much invented that whole schtick before every mobile phone company got in on the act.

London 4EVA

What a week, the riots/looting prompted a lot of opinions, some of it inspiring and some of it depressing. London is my hometown, my parents’ adopted city where they settled after coming over from France and Ireland. Have been having a bit of Rory McLeod one-woman revival at home, if you like folk then give [...]

Pakayla Biehn

Pakayla Biehn’s double exposures are so beautiful but carry something a bit disquieting, which makes them even more beautiful. The painting below is called “Ten thousand times I thought about it, this time I’m doing it.” which seems to sum up large parts of my life. Pakayla also blogs here, yay so you can find [...]

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace

Just finished watching All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, talk about a mindplosion. I’d expect nothing less from the guy who brought you Power of Nightmares, but seeing as the subject matter is about networks, technology and computers it all feels a little bit closer to home. Watching the terrifying first episode I [...]

Do you Spoek Mathambo?

Been listening to Spoek Mathambo all day, have to give thanks to Sam, my ‘other other half’ for turning me on to this. He’s seriously addictive, I could listen to Mshini Wam all day. His cover of Joy Division’s Control is really something and the video is hella dark. Love the embroidered tie

Spoek is from [...]

Trisha’s / the Hideout

Talking to my flatmate one evening about the best late night bars, I was trying to explain the appeal of my favourite place, and found these brilliant pictures. Trisha’s or the Hideout is a little bar behind a nondescript door off Soho Square. The Hideout is the perfect place for post-pub drinks, a cosy den [...]

Confetti System party!

I’ve spent a lot of time looking for party decoration inspiration for my birthday next week. Most of my attention has been focused at the Confetti System’s beautiful garlands, their colour schemes are just brilliant. Sherbet-y pastels mixed with sludgy neutrals and metallics is something everyone can get on board with and I think I [...]

The Peony Pavillion

I love peonies, they lack the stylised fluted shape of a rose, but the flower heads are so fullsome and abundant it more than makes up for it. Magda Indigo’s beautifully shot images of peonies capture that lavish bounty, but with a stark darkness. I almost wish I could eat them, if that makes sense? [...]

David Shrigley is chugging for the arts

“Excuse me, can I just…”

I usually wave chuggers off with a ‘I spend £30 quid a month in charity shops’ but this is one good cause worth suppporting, as the arts in the UK face something like a 40% cut under a coalition government that has also just scrapped milk for schoolchildren. Really? Webcameron [...]
