Nailwraps: Influences

Phoebe Davies, a friend and artist based down the road from me has been working with young women from a pupil referral unit in Lewisham. They came up with the awesome idea for feminist nailwraps while researching the girls attitudes to feminism and representations of women.

The result is a series of kick-ass nail wraps featuring from left: Astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, farmer and Phoebe’s gran Mary McKeand, civil rights activist Rosa Parks, femi collective Guerilla Girls, Emmeline Pankhurst (who needs no intro), Brixton community leader Olive Morris, Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi, Tavi (obvs), Living Dolls author Natasha Walter, and conceptual artist Adrian Piper.

I love having feminists on my fingertips, it just makes me think up my ten favourite women to have on my nails. I think Gentlewoman’s Penny Martin, Miuccia Prada, Poly Styrene from X Ray Spex, Fever Ray/The Knife’s Karin Dreijer and Octavia Hill (south London social housing pioneer) would definitely make my top ten. As well as both of my grandmothers of course. Who would you have on your dream femi-list?

Check out the nails in action below, scuse the dodgy pics, one-handed focusing is pretty tricky!
