‘Where are you? Btw we’ve been upgraded to a SUITE’. One Aldwych recently offered me the chance to stay in their hotel, I’m fairly familiar with the place as it’s just opposite Somerset House so perfect for Fashion Week meetings/industry types-spotting. I invited my sister along as a late birthday treat and from her text message she was obviously already impressed.
I finally finished my work and boy what an upgrade, the suite was huge, I’ve lived in flats smaller than this room. Spacious lounge, comfortable kitchenette and a luxurious bathroom with my favourite hotel detail, a tv. There’s nothing like lying in the bath and watching some trash, or just doing your morning routine to BBC breakfast.
We were treated to a three-course meal at The Indigo restaurant which looks over the bar area. I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels but I’ve never been taken care of as well as I was here. The staff were really attentive but without ever being intrusive. We had between us pigeon breast salad with beetroot, pepper crusted tuna with green mango pomelo and peanuts, my sister went for the sensible hake and I opted for their 28 day dry aged rib-eye steak with Bearnaise sauce because I’m a total pig. Take a look at my fork-focus gif to get a feeling for what it was like.
After dinner we headed down to the bar to have cocktails, I like to sit at hotel bars because it makes me feel a bit like Jack Nicholson in the Shining which is always a good feeling. I love ‘proper’ cocktails like whiskey sours and the one at One Aldwych is particularly good, they gussy it up with a bit of bergamot flavoured foam. I think it was bergamot, but I was well into a bottle of wine and dessert wine by that point so I may have to return to confirm.
It was a real treat to creep back up to the huge bed and sink into the fancy hotel sheets. Next morning we went for spa treatments, they use Natura Bissé products and we both went for the Oxygen facial to revive tired skin. It was really relaxing and felt totally pampering, although I didn’t immediately notice any massive difference. The next day however, my skin was totally glowing. Like, ‘I’m 21′ glowing. Incredible. My sis got a few comments on her glowy skin the next day too.
Breakfast was similarly indulgent with a bi-course pastry and cooked option which I heartily approve of. Paying tribute to my porcine tendencies I chose the full English with a delicious carrot juice while my sister picked the slightly more delicate eggs Benedict. It was a really refreshing stay and we were treated like absoloute queens, plus the Aldwych location is very central but sort of the edge of the madness of Covent Garden. I’m not kidding, it was so much indulgence I went home and had beans on toast for dinner to counter balance all the pampering.
