Feast your eyes on this! Teaser pics of GIles Deacon’s collection for Happy Socks have just landed and they’re even better than I imagined. Referencing his googly eye motif, and the diamanté spider form a few seasons back they’re fun but real purdy too. And omg I die! 70 Euros for a boxed collection of a week’s worth of socks available in December. Even for a thrifty miser like me that Isn’t Too Bad. A portion of the profits goes to the Elton John AIDS Foundation so it’s spreading the love around, although I kind of wish they were making a luxe set with Swarovskis for the trés posh consumer…

I am currently sitting in bed singing ‘Giles, oh Giles, oh Gi-iiiles!’ to the tune of Des’ree’s lyrically dubious song. If all around you are reviving the ’70s, and you’re coming back to your stomping ground what do you do? Throw a massive fashion party that melds ’90s post-rave and Studio 54 high glam, with a big ladle of the chic couture dresses Giles does so well. Watching it come together backstage for the ol’ day job, by the time it appeared on the catwalk I nearly had a little tear in my eye (not saying much, I cried at Don’t Tell The Bride t’other day).

Pukesome (in a good way) ’90s knits courtesy of Sibling mixed with a French Fancy yellow floral and ruffled trainers. Pumping out the speakers was Bjork’s ‘There’s More To Life Than This’ with the ‘jjetto blaster bit’, which reminded me of the good old days when Bjork went out with Goldie and everyone wore trainers, maxi skirts, organza tops and mohair knits.

Tank tops and ultra wide pants ticked the ’70s box, but light fabrics gave it a little joie de vivre and lightness. The couture section was made up of dresses in soft Elastoplast pink and chocomilk brown. I can’t help looking at the pleated column frock and imagining an a-lister’s PR requesting it to be made up without the eyeball.

It’s a testament to Giles’ skill as a designer that he can sort of put together these mini collections of a handful of different ideas and they become a cohesive whole. The celebfest added to the party atmosphere, Abigail Clancy modelled, as did Kelly Brook and the front row seated some prize celebs like Kerry Katona and Janice Dickinson. It might seem a little incongruous, but it was a bit like Giles was humming the Cage aux Folles ‘I Am What I Am’ and unleashing his inner fashion moron. I love that song, and I love morons. Last week I boarded the Eurostar to Paris to cover the Giles show for work, trésemmé exciting as you can imagine. I thought I’d share some of the pictures from the day, the Giles studio must be really quite organised as it was the calmest pre-catwalk show atmosphere I’ve seen. I chatted to the make up artist Miranda Joyce who looked amazing in a brick silk shirt and mannish trousers, and the nail person was none other than Sophy Robson. Glad to see more yellow in the catwalk, at Giles it was cosily paired with coral, brown and cream. Obvs everyone is talking about the Gremlin and Gonk bags they’re insane and wishlist worthy. Rachael has a potted gonk history for all the fashion geeks out there. I love the way that minus the akookrements like the Pac Man headgear from a few seasons back Giles’ clothes are actually quite ladylike and classic. Oh and I met Chris Moore, who just started a blog, hero alert!

The day was amazing, everyone was really helpful and friendly, apart from an idiot taxi driver who overcharged us. I may be 50% français but I don’t have the French temper to back it up and fight back! I interviewed Giles, which should be available on You Tube soon, my only regret is that I didn’t ask him about his vintage paperclip collection. Gah! More pics after the jump
