Disappointingly, the last Jil Sander collaboration for Uniqlo was a bit of a damp squib especially as they’re one of the few high street stores I actually shop at. I’ve been thinking about it, and perhaps all the missing fanfare and gimmickry you usually get with collaborations is just a sign of Jil Sander’s continued commitment to the brand. The 2nd Uniqlo J+ collection hits the stores tomorrow, and there’s one piece that definitely does not disappoint.

This simple navy jacket looks like it could easily become a summer staple. I’ve had my eye on navy for a while; fashion is totally in a classic gallic mode and navy really hits the spot. There are many different kinds of navy though, and thankfully this one is a rich, intense colour. Too drab and navy will wash you out, get the right colour and it will give you that Mediterranean glow French people have.

The proportions are pretty perfect too, long sleeves with a shrunken body and downsized lapels, the low-down pockets would gently rest on the hipbone. It makes me think of the jackets Kirsten Dunst wore in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, beautifully shrunken and years ahead of their time. Can you tell I’m fantasising about trying it on?! Anyway, it will be interesting to see the whole collection instore, are you going to be having a look?

Trusting my instincts is something I’m learning to do more and more as I get older, so when I spotted a woman wearing a gorgeous jacket on the tube I have no idea why I didn’t ask her where it came from.

It was dusky pink, with no lining and made from a non-stretch guipure type lace. The cut was simple, cropped and slightly boxy with no collar, in short I fell in love with it. Of course a jacket like that will serve no warming/protecting purpose but who cares when it can make even your most boring outfit look exciting and fancy. Short of making a shrine for it I don’t think there’s anything I can do except: dig out the green guipure dress I was going to eBay, try to craft a similar jacket from an old Primarni frock and search for similar jackets on Shopstyle check, check and check.

A few asides about lace:

My mum is a college lecturer and I once made bobbin lace at one of their open days, so amazingly exciting you would not believe.

Not strictly lace, but once I got so obsessed with dotted swiss and couldn’t find it anywhere that I contemplated sitting with a length of muslin and hand-embroidering the dots like they used to in the Olden Days.
